Hey, are you having a good time Stay, everything's gonna be fine You heard it before and you'll hear it again It's not a matter of where it's just a matter of when There's someone shouting that the world's gonna end But it's not ending right now, and I say yeah! Are you having a good time? Oh , hey, there ain't nothin like sunshine Blue skies and a red wine Gettin' high on the grapevine Are you having a good time? The day falls, the night calls We watch the world go 'round We'll hold hands, we'll make plans And then it all goes down It all goes down Are you having a good time?

Holes 02:03
Holes I only feel, where it hurts I only know the fear I've never fully understood What's missing here There are holes in my story That someone says they'd fill I've nothing left but time To kill Hi, ho! It's off to work I go It's the same thing every day Essentially, it's up to me So they say There's no thanks and there's no glory No house upon the hill There's just another empty shelf Like the empty space inside myself To fill
3.
Longer Hours 02:30
Longer Hours Mmm, hmm, hmm... Faster than a rumor It's spreading through the air Still got my sense of humor I'm just a little scared What's this gonna mean For a guy like me? Will I still be stocking shelves? I guess I'll wait and see... Gotta find out for myself Who should I turn to for the news And what about my mental health This is not the same old blues Mmm, hmm, hmm... Dear valued teammate Your work is essential! Your presence is valued Your toil consequential! We ask you to work longer hours We ask you to work longer days Work shifts will be longer, be longer Without much more pay!
4.
Now We Wait 04:04
Now We Wait The nameless days are drifting by Like a cloud, in a cloudless sky The sound of leaves in summer breeze Whispering memories and mystery We wait, Now we wait, Now we wait, We wait It's all been said and done tonight Except to rage against the dying of the light It's all been read, in black and white When wild we sang and caught the sun in flight We wait, Now we wait, Now we wait, We wait
5.
Inner Being 03:20
Inner Being Lock down's here All the fear Closed away, away... From the outside Pathogen Don't come in Stay away, away... From the inside A quiet home And new routines We're on our own marking time We'll stay within our shell Fatality Mortality It stalks us all statistically Hope things improve someday, some way Day by day Months give way I'm okay, okay... When you're near me So come what may We'll find our way We'll seize each day anew And reinvent the wheel Make new plans Break new plans Turn off the radio and wait For the sun to shine
6.
Somebody Spoke Somebody spoke, somebody listened Someone awoke, someone went missing Somebody told you a lie Somebody told you a lie Somebody told you, they told you, they told you a lie Someone consoled you When they told you They told you a lie Someone controlled you When they told you They told you A lie

Everything's Cancelled Everything's cancelled including you! There's nothing at all in the world to do No NBA, no Shakespeare play, no not today! TO BE OR NOT TO... Everything's cancelled and it's not fair There's some kind of virus traveling through the air Is it too much to ask, to wear this mask? NO, I DON'T WANT TO!... Start washing your hands and making zero plans You thought N95 was a highway And now you'll be saying on the road ahead, nothing will be going my way! Everything's cancelled that you did before I hope you can get inside the grocery store No bookclub, no tennis, just Covid menace! And now everything's shut! NUTS! No if ands or buts! BUTTS! Now everything's done and you'll miss all the fun Because everything's cancelled, including you! The coach he just cancelled your kids T-ball game STRIKE! Your movies and clubs will never be the same You won't be allowed, where there's a crowd... Now that life's over you'll just sit at home Your link to the world is now a cellular phone I'm sure that you'll be fine, with life online! I DON'T HAVE THE PASSWORD! You took it for granted, all the things you did Like walking uptown and dropping off the kids They're hoarding the Charmin and it's so alarmin' So I guess you're just out of luck... WHAT?! YEAH PEOPLE ARE STOCKPILING IT LIKE IT'S GOLD BULLION, SHEESH! And now everything's shut! NUTS! No if ands or buts! BUTTS! Everything's done, DONE! - NO FUN! Because everything's cancelled, including you... And what can you do? ZOOM?! What can you do? ZOOM! The CDC warning says to stay in your room! And now everything's cancelled, including you! I guess you'll zoom, I guess we'll zoom, I guess I'll zoom....

The Time Before I remember the time before Now it's coming again Always looking for something more Oh, we had it all then But lately I've been waiting while CauseThe days just roll on by Maybe it's too late to try To make something of my life I remember the time The time before So hard to change my mind And it's harder changing my ways It's been this way for a thousand years Give or take a few days I'm frustrated by the wasted time I can't explain just why And I'm shaken by the ways that I've Been made to change my life (And that's not right) I remember the time The time before

Midnight 02:57
Midnight It's late at night & I'm all alone But out there someone's awake Someone else that thinks like me Has had all he can take Connecting all the threads Into a tapestry of rage He hoists a ragged banner In this information age An hour turns to two, then three He's got a simple plan We've got to save our way of life And let the rest be damned It's midnight We won't stand by and let a mob Weave a tapestry of strife I've found my place in cyberspace And meaning in my life It's midnight Midnight It's late at night and I'm not alone...

Showtime 03:06
Showtime Is this the revolution The dawning of the day? Are we the better angels Come with hell to pay? Images are flashing in my mind Behind my eyes It's all come crashing down I can't tell truth from lies
13.
Put Out The Fire In our house, there's a room, and it's burning We can't keep behind closed doors There are lessons we need to be learning Or we'll keep fighting these same wars In our house in this country divided Where we build up our walls at all cost We think someone else is gonna clean up our mess So we don't give a damn what we've lost You don't give a damn about freedom If you don't give a damn about choice So when you pledge your allegiance, don't abandon all reason Don't let someone else take your voice Put out the fire There are rivers in time can divide us But still there are bridges to cross Way down inside us there's a truth and it's speaking In a whisper but it sometimes gets lost In our house with a room that's burning We can't keep behind closed doors We all seen the smoke, yeah we thought was a joke Oh it's grown into something much more So now wake up you all-for-one Cowboys There's a fire to put out, work to do So lay down your grievance, the lies you believed in Find something better in you Put out the fire In our house, there's a room, and it's burning
14.
Lost I've been lost, been away In the moment, in the day I got caught in the wave Swept away, in the parade But now the the sands have all run through the glass And consequence will come to pass I can't un-ring the bell thats's rung What's done is done What's done is done It's done Holes Reprise Now I feel, and it hurts I tasted of the fear And now it's well and understood What's happened here Now there are holes in my glory But there's some still say they won And now I can't escape What I've done What have I done?

about

This album/rock opera was written in real-time as the pandemic set in, and our world changed. What follows is the opening to the libretto.

Joey Wendt never knew whether he was coming or going. And in fact, he only really got his bearings in the Spring of 2021—the hard way.
Joey was never one to analyze his situation much, which put him squarely in the comfortable back seat of his own existence. Not one to strive or aspire, he merely arrived, quite a while ago, in the lower strata of personal achievement.
Spending most of his adult life in dead-end jobs while partying and fronting a rock band on the weekends was Joey’s modus operandi. He hated his nightly work grind during the week but compensated by popping a cork on the weekend with his compadres, living entirely beer-to-beer, moment-to-moment. Joey and company had been at it so long that they knew at this stage in their middle-aged lives just how to effectively raise hell, all while staying on the right side of the law most of the time. But that was about to change. His musical clique was a sometimes raging, sometimes floundering, group of guys with thimbles full of talent, collectively known as “Chickenwire Canoe.”
Now grudgingly celebrating his umpteenth part-time job, Joey stocks shelves at night for a local grocery store. Our sleepwalking hero can phone it in all week—he is a reliable, stalwart worker who knows the boundaries, knows the ropes, and goes with the flow. But in March of 2020 everything changed for Joey. Civilization as we knew it changed as well, due to a world pandemic. How Joey and his cohorts reacted to these changes is the subject of this song cycle.
Just as every life is unique, each reaction to the terrible specter of the pandemic has also been unique. “Joey Wendt by Chickenwire Canoe” presents a variety of vignettes about this awful time in each of our lives, and asks questions about personal character, the individual-societal bond, and why one person receives messages that others fail to recognize. This is a story about perception.
